JAY "TONTO" SILVERHEELS - AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 257437
Price: $550.00
JAY SILVERHEELS
Black and white publicity photograph of Jay Silverheels with William Conrad.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Jess/My friend/Best wishes/Jay Silverheels". B/w,
10x8. Shown with William Conrad (not signing). Best known as "Tonto", "the faithful
Indian companion" of television's Lone Ranger (1949-1957), Silverheels (1918-1980)
had many other film roles, including three performances as Geronimo in Westerns of the 1950s.
Dissatisfied with what he considered the stereotyped parts assigned to "Tonto", he founded the
Indian Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late 1960s with the dual goals of creating more
acting opportunities for Native Americans and of improving their screen image. In 1979 he
became the first American Indian (a full-blooded Mohawk) with a star in Hollywood's
Walk of Fame. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
