(1914-1999)entered show business as a young circus acrobat. He
worked his way up the ladder in Hollywood Westerns from extra to stunt man to
supporting actor, reaching stardom on television as The Lone
Ranger from 1949-1952 and 1954-1957. Thereafter he made a good living
from commercials and public appearances as The Lone Ranger. Best known as
"Tonto", "the faithful Indian companion" of television's Lone Ranger
(1949-1957), JAY SILVERHEELS (1918-1980) had many other film roles,
including three performances as Geronimo in Westerns of the 1950s. Dissatisfied
with what he considered the stereotyped parts assigned to "Tonto", he founded
the Indian Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late 1960s with the dual
goals of creating more acting opportunities for Native Americans and of
improving their screen image. In 1979 he became the first American Indian (a
full-blooded Mohawk) with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Two
items.
