JAY SILVERHEELS
Jay Silverheels signs a document giving his consent for the use of
brief clips from The Lone Ranger on an ABC TV special celebrating the
network's 25th anniversary.
Document signed: "Jay Silverheels [followed by a
pictograph]", 1p, 8½x11. Canoga Park, California, 1977 December 27.
Silverheels signs his consent for the use of brief clips from The Lone
Ranger on an ABC TV special celebrating the network's 25th anniversary, at
his established fee of $225 per clip shown and an addition $225 for re-runs and
for broadcasts outside the U.S. and Canada. Silverheels has added his Social
Security number (blacked out in image). Best known as "Tonto", "the faithful
Indian companion" of television's Lone Ranger (1949-1957),
Silverheels (1918-1980) had many other film roles, including three
performances as Geronimo in Westerns of the 1950s. Dissatisfied with what he
considered the stereotyped parts assigned to "Tonto", he founded the Indian
Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late 1960s with the dual goals of
creating more acting opportunities for Native Americans and of improving their
screen image. In 1979 he became the first American Indian (a full-blooded
Mohawk) with a star in Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Slightly soiled. Staple and
binder holes at top. Otherwise, fine condition.
