Stratford-on-Avon (England), 1982 February 10. On personal letterhead to
Rev. and Mrs. F. W. Britton. In full: "I am happy to join with your
friends in sending congratulations on your 50th anniversary and best wishes for
the future." John Boynton Priestley (1894-1984), twice seriously
wounded in the front lines in World War I, emerged in the interwar years as a
major novelist, playwright and literary critic. Disapproving of the truce among
Britain's political parties during World War II, he tried unsuccessfully to
found a new socialist alternative to the Labour Party. He remained an
influential left-wing intellectual. Among his best known works are the novels
The Good Companions (1929) and Lost Empires (1965) and plays
When We Are Married (1938) and An Inspector Calls (1946). Fine
condition.
