John Boynton PRIESTLEY (1894-1984), twice seriously wounded in the front lines in World War I, emerged in the interwar years as a major novelist, playwright and literary critic. Disapproving of the truce among Britain's political parties during World War II, he tried unsuccessfully to found a new socialist alternative to the Labour Party. He remained an influential left-wing intellectual.
