The French Painter pens this letter in response to the recipient's request to visit him
Autograph Letter Signed: “J.B. Olive”. 1p, 8x11. July 13, 1926. Written to “Dear Sir”. In
French, translated in full: “In compliance with the request of your letter, I would be honored to
receive you next Thursday the 15th or Friday the 16th at your convenience at the time that best
works for you. Waiting for your reply, please Sir accept my distinguished civilities”. Jean-Baptiste
Olive (1848-1936) was a French painter primarily known for sea-themed and port scenes
of his hometown of Marseille and for his still lifes. During his time at the École des
Beaux-Arts at Marseille, Olive received first prize for his work in the live model class. He
traveled to Italy in 1874, and in 1882 he moved to Paris where he contributed to the Cirque
d'Hiver and the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur. Beginning in 1874, he exhibited at the Salon de
Paris, and received several prizes for the work he displayed there. Awarded a silver medal for
the work he displayed at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Olive became a member of Société
des Artistes Français in 1881. Toward the end of his life, he received the Léon Bonnat prize in
1930. Olive's primary patrons were General Malesherbes and Marie -Louis Gassier. “J.B.
Olive” written in blue crayon on upper portion of letter. Heavily toned. Staining throughout.
