JEAN DICKENSON
"The Nightingale of the Airwaves" signs a handwritten letter on her personal NBC note paper.
Autograph Letter signed: "Jean Dickenson", 5½x3½ New York City, September 5 [1940]. On her personal National Broadcasting Company note paper to "Dear Alice Ingham", in full: "I am sorry it has taken so long to answer you. I am sending you a picture today. [Item not included.] Sincerely yours". Addressed in her own hand on verso, postmarked New York, N. Y., September 6, 1940. Coloratura soprano Jean Dickinson (1913-2007), born in Montreal to US parents, performed with the Denver Grand Opera Company from 1934 to 1939, including the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Philine in Mignon in 1941. However, Dickenson was most familiar to radio audiences, earning the sobriquet "the Nightingale of the Airwaves." She sang first on the CBS weekly Hollywood Hotel, and then became a fixture on NBC's American Album of Familiar Music from 1937 to 1951. Lightly toned. Light wear on corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
