The English poet writes to Thomas Gold Appleton, brother-in-law of
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, sending copies of a picture to Gold and Longfellow.
In 1876, a volume of verses was published with Ingelow's name above Longfellow's
on the title page.
Autograph Letter signed: "Jean Ingelow", 1 page, 4½x7. No
place, no date. "To Mr. Thomas Gold Appleton", in full: "My
mother continues so very unwell that I do not feel able to leave her. I
therefore send you the portrait of Sir J. Franklin (copy for yourself & one
(when you shall see him) for Mr. Longfellow. I am very truly yours". Jean
Ingelow (1820-1897) was an English poet and novelist, published from 1850
but very popular in Britain and the US following her collection Poems
(1863). Many of her poems, including "Sailing Beyond Seas", were made
into the lyrics of popular songs. She also wrote novels for both adults
and children, one of the latter - Mopsy the Fairy (1869), proving
particularly popular. Thomas Gold Appleton (1812-1884) was the brother-in-law
of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). In 1876, a volume
of poems by Ingelow, Longfellow and John Greenleaf Whittier was published, with
Ingelow's name listed first on the title page. Normal mailing folds. Lightly
toned. Corners slightly worn. Left edge creased. Slightly soiled around edges.
Faint circular stain in center of page. Otherwise, fine
condition.
