The poet writes to a doctor friend, asking if she can have two
bottles of an "iron mixture" previously prescribed to her
Autograph letter signed: "Jean Ingelow", in faded black ink, 1
page (front and verso), 4½x6¾. London, England. In full: "Dear Dr.
Monckton, As our own medical friend is away from London can you let me have two
more bottles of the iron mixture such as you prepared for me last month. As it
is such you equally bottle will you allow me to have the prescription & and
add this to your account whenever it is convenient to you to favour me with it.
I am yours very sincerely". Post script: "In case you do not give
prescriptions will you let the medicine be sent by railway to the address I have
given". Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) was an English poet and novelist,
published from 1850 but very popular in Britain and the US following her
collection Poems (1863). Many of her poems, including "Sailing Beyond
Seas", were made into the lyrics of popular songs. She also wrote
novels for both adults and children, one of the latter - Mopsy the
Fairy (1869), proving particularly popular. Multiple folds. Surface creases.
Left and top edge absent of black mourning border. Stained on top margin. Tear
on back top margin that shows through to front. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
