Autograph note signed: "Jean Ingelow", in faded black ink,
4½x7 black bordered mourning paper. Kensington, London. March 1849. In full:
"Miss Ingelow presents her compliments and autograph to Mrs. Strout".
Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) was an English poet and novelist, published from
1850 but very popular in Britain and the US following her collection
Poems (1863). Many of her poems, including "Sailing Beyond Seas",
were made into the lyrics of popular songs. She also wrote novels for
both adults and children, one of the latter - Mopsy the Fairy (1869),
proving particularly popular. Folds. Left edge worn. Corners lightly worn. Light
surface creases. Slightly toned. Soiled on front and verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
