The French artist pens this letter to a friend updating him both on his recent travels and
his wife's health, and also promising to invite him over to eat soon
Autograph Letter Signed: “E Meissonier” 1p, 5¼x8. On his personalized stationery. In the
letter he begins by discussing his return to Poissy, his sprawling mansion, and the frustrations
of traveling. He then promises to invite the recipient over in the near future. In French,
translated in part: “I'm waiting for a fish that Arayo promised to bring me (hopefully it will
arrive before April 1st) as soon as I have the news about when it's arriving I'll let you know so you
can come eat with some company./ The chest pains have let up on my wife a little. But she's still
suffering from rheumatism / Very affectionately yours” Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier
(1815-1891) was a popular French Classicist painter, who also worked as a sculptor.
Known for his strict attention to detail, he gained repute for his depictions of Napoleon, his
armies and various other military themes. He is also well remembered for tutoring Édouard
Detaille. In 1846, he purchased a gigantic mansion at Poissy, which was oftentimes referred to
as Le Grande Maison. Moderately toned. Two horizontal mailing folds. Light wear at corners
and edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
