JEAN MUIR
Vintage photo, gazing upward, inscribed to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph signed: "To Saul/Jean Muir". B/w, 8x10. Ink stamp on verso
dates signature August 18, 1938. Jean Muir (1911-1996) appeared in films for a
decade, from Son of a Sailor (1933) to The Constant Nymph (1943),
but preferred the theatre because she felt Hollywood wasn't giving her strong
enough roles. She was supposed to star in TV's The Aldrich Family, but
was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Distraught at the ruin of her
acting career, Muir began to drink heavily, but recovered to make a return to
television in guest appearances through 1962 (Route 66, Naked
City). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day,
pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many
celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman
presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen.
Minor edge dings and light rippling. Otherwise, fine
condition.
