JEAN SIMMONS and PHYLLIS CALVERT
Two British actresses sign opposite sides of a 4¾x3¾ green album leaf
Signatures: "Jean Simmons" and on verso "Phyllis Calvert", 4¾x3¾ green album leaf. British actress JEAN SIMMONS (1929-2010), born in Crouch Hill, London, England, earned critical acclaim in such films as Great Expectations (1946), Laurence Olivier's Hamlet (as Ophelia, 1948, Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination), Elmer Gantry (1960) and The Happy Ending (1968, Academy Award nomination). In all, Simmons was nominated for 6 Golden Globe awards - winning once for Guys and Dolls (1956), nominated for 2 Academy Awards and she won an Emmy for The Thorn Birds (1983). Dark Shadows fans may remember her as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, while anime fans may recognize her voice as that of Grandma Sophie in the English-language version of Howl's Moving Castle (2004). Beginning with 1943's The Man in Grey, CALVERT established herself as Britain's favorite "Gothic" heroine, seldom carrying on a romance unless she was dressed in 19th-century fashion, with her long black hair cascading in the wind. The best of her Hollywood efforts was in Appointment with Danger (1950). She also starred on the popular BBC TV series Kate (1970-71). Lightly creased. Lightly shaded at edges. Irregular left edge due to removal from book. Ink notes at top (unknown hand). Mounting remnants show through.
