JEAN STAPLETON. TLS: "Jean", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, 1978
April 15. On sheet imprinted with her name to Mr. Jason Wingreen, Studio
City, California. In full: "Thanks for your note of April 10th. I
have spoken to Brooke Buhrman at Tandem regarding Sonny and he is to call
her. I am sure she will see him. Brooke is in charge of personnel and
this is the best way to be introduced there. I will be going away on
April 26th and will be returning May 1st. Then I'll be leaving for Pennsylvania
for the summer on May 19th, so if Sonny is still here after May 1st maybe you
would call me and see if there is a chance we could all get together. Will be in
touch. Love". Stapleton has crossed out the "e" on the and written
"[th]is is the" (bolded above). Signed the year before the end of the
ground-breaking TV sitcom, All in the Family, in which Stapleton starred
as Edith Bunker (1968-1979). Stage, screen and television actress Jean
Stapleton (born in 1923) is best known for her role as Edith Bunker, aka
"Dingbat". Although the Emmy Award-winning "Edith" opened the show
each week with a screeching rendition of "Those Were the Days", Stapleton not
only possessed a lilting, well-modulated singing voice, but she was far from a
"dingbat" in real life. She endeared herself to Broadwayites with her
wistfully funny characterizations in the SRO musicals Damn Yankees,
Bells Are Ringing and Funny Girl, roles that she would carry over
into the film versions of these hits. Most of her onscreen work could be
found in New York-based movies (Something Wild, Up the Down
Staircase and Klute) and TV series (Car 54, Where Are You?,
The Defenders and The Patty Duke Show). Stapleton has also made a
number of other feature films, including You've Got Mail (1998), and has
been a guest star on a number of other TV shows. Lightly creased with folds, not
at signature. Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
