JEANNETTE PICCARD
Jeannette Piccard sends a typed letter forwarding a postcard signed by Auguste Piccard.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jeannette Piccard", 1p, 8½x11. Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1938 March 9. To Lionel Aucoin, Spencer, Massachusetts. In full: "Enclosed is a post card autographed by Auguste Piccard. I do not know whether Auguste Piccard would autograph a photograph if you sent it to him or not. He is a very busy person and the photograph might get lost under more important things. There is no possibility of a stratosphere flight this year. Dr. Piccard is going to be during a part of the summer quarter at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. We are hoping that we might may be able to get sponsorship that will make flight possible in 1939." Postcard mentioned not present. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches second "n" in Jeannette. Fine condition. With original postmarked, stamped envelope. Creased, lightly soiled. AUGUSTE PICCARD was the twin brother of Jeannette's husband, Dr. JEAN PICCARD. Jean, a chemist and aeronautical engineer, with his wife, JEANNETTE RIDLON PICCARD (1895-1981), made a stratospheric ascent in a balloon from Dearborn, Michigan, reaching a then-record altitude of 57,579 feet on October 23, 1934. On that flight, Mrs. Piccard became the first woman to enter the stratosphere. Two items.
