JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: GRACE SLICK, JACK CASADY and JORMA KAUKONEN Cover for their 1969 album Volunteers, signed by three members of the group Inscribed Record Album Cover signed: "Grace/Slick", "Jack Casady", "J Kaukonen", 12½x12½. Record included. Volunteers, released in 1969, was controversial at the time due to its anti-war messages. Singer/songwriter/guitarist MARTY BALIN (b. 1942) co-founded Jefferson Airplane with singer/rhythm guitarist Paul Kanter (b. 1942), in 1965. Guitarist, singer, and songwriter JORMA KAUKONEN, (b. 1940) was another early member of the group, and the one who urged his friend, bassist JACK CASADY (b. 1944), to try out for Airplane. GRACE SLICK (b. 1939) was the lead singer for the rock group Jefferson Airplane from 1967 to 1973 and its successor Jefferson Starship (1974-1988), She also released four well-received solo albums in between touring and recording with the groups. Jefferson Airplane's biggest hits include “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit”, both off the 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. Although Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1973, Kaukonen and Casady formed a spin-off group, Hot Tuna, in 1970, and both participated in the Jefferson Airplane reunion in 1989. Balin left the group in 1971, but returned to Jefferson Starship from 1975 to 1978. Although Slick seldom performed after 1990, she published her autobiography, Somebody to Love?: A Rock-and-Roll Memoir, in 1998. No band better represented the spirit of San Francisco-based, counterculture psychedelic rock than Jefferson Airplane. Corners worn and creased. Cover faded in some areas. Notched on top edge on verso. "To/7424" written in an unknown hand on the canton of the American flag featured in the cover art. Otherwise, fine condition.
