First Day Cover Signed: "Jeffery Matthews" in black ink. 7x4½ clipped commemorative envelope (affixed to piece of white paper) celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on November 20, 1972. Also features First Day of Issue stamps postmarked November 20, 1972 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Addressed to Mr. Victor W. Croxford of Surrey, England. Jeffery Matthewsisa British artist, specializing in postage stamp design, best known for conceiving the Machin definitive series' color palette in the mid-1980s. While studying interior design, Matthews was taught heraldry and letter typography, soon becoming an illustrator specializing in creating logotypes, graphic and typographic designs for public administration, firms and book covers; he joined the Council of Industrial Design in the 1950s and in 1959 was proposed to the Post Office as a designer, and became a regular contributor. The Machin series, designed in the 1970, features Queen Elizabeth's profile since 1967, Matthews designed new symbols for the Regional Machins in 1971 with new digits and letters, and in 1976 he prepared the three colors needed for the photograved high value stamps. Irregularly cut. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
