JENNINGS RANDOLPH. Autograph Letter signed: "Jennings" as U.S. Senator, 3p, 6¼x8½. His personal Senate letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1979 January 3, 8 AM. To "Dear Pat" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. In full: "This is the first day of the 96th Congress. I begin by writing a 'thank you' for your book 'A Dangerous Place.' You, good friend, have moved from one hazardous area to your present precarious perch on Capitol Hill. You are 'at home' here!!, in part because of the UN experience - a fine training ground. Your very kind words about me in the inscription are greatly appreciated. I cherish our friendship. May 1979 bring to the Moynihan clan success and service! Truly," Randolph (1902-1998), a West Virginia Democrat, served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1933-1947). Defeated for re-election in 1946, he left elective office for a decade, and then returned to the U.S. Senate (1958-1985). Randolph's service in Congress began with Franklin Roosevelt's first term and ended with Ronald Reagan's second, more than half a century! DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford". As noted in this letter, he had represented the U.S. at the United Nations (his "very dangerous place") before becoming a Senator. Estate inventory numbers in left margins of all 3 pages, top margin of first page. Faint paperclip impressions in upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
