Best from" Randolph (1902-1998), a West Virginia Democrat, served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1933-1947). Defeated for re-election in 1946, he left elective office for a decade, and then returned to the U.S. Senate (1958-1985). The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a New Deal program initiated by President Franklin Roosevelt at the beginning of his administration to create jobs with reforestation and other environmental projects. Randolph was a freshman Congressman when the CCC was created, and a retiring Senator when he invoked its memory over forty years later!
