This Bible verse reads, in the King James Version, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Hines (1921-2003, born Jerome Albert Link Heinz in Hollywood, California) was an American bass singer who sang 41 years at the New York Metropolitan Opera who is probably best known for his roles as Ramfis in Verdi's Aïda, Méphistophélès in Gounod's Faust and the title role in Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov (which he once sang at the Bolshoi Theatre for Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev. He made his operatic debut at the San Francisco Opera House in 1941 in Verdi's Rigoletto. Hines began his long career at the Met in 1946, playing the sergeant in Boris Godunov. It was the first of his 869 Met performances, spanning 45 characters in 39 operas. He also founded the Opera-Music Theatre of New Jersey in 1987. Hines was a member of the Salvation Army and composed an opera on the life of Jesus called I Am the Way. Lightly toned. Signature is lightly smeared. Light show-through from ink on verso.
