JEROME KASS
A letter from the playwright to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World, correcting him on
his wrongly credited plays to director Peter kass
Typed Letter Signed: "Jerome Kass", in blue ink, 1 page, 8½x11. May 24, 1971. New York
City, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Willis: I happened today to be glancing through some of your
THEATRE WORLDs and, on page 154 of Volume 22 (for 1965-1966), came upon mention of
MONOPOLY, an evening of four of my plays which were produced by The Establishment
Theatre Company at Stage 73. Alas, the plays are attributed not to me but to Peter Kass, a
director. Six years may have passed since that production opened and closed, but since THEATRE
WORLD is one of the few theatre works (if not the only one) that even acknowledges its existence,
I find the error nevertheless painful. Sincerely". Jerome Kass (1937-2015) is a playwright and
television writer, working in the field for over 20 years. While his first works may be the above
mentioned Monopoly, he is not properly credited until A Brand New Life (1973), a
television movie. He wrote for several more television movies, including the Emmy
nominated Queen of the Stardust Ballroom (1975). The movie, while it did not win the
Emmy, won a WGA Award. Kass' last writing credit was on the television movie Secrets
(1995). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its
chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the
foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting)
the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the
Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in
2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn.
Ink notes (unknown hand). Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
