1p, 8½x11. Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1976 January 7. On official letterhead with embossed
state seal to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your letter of December
18, 1975. It is my pleasure to send you an autographed photograph of myself for your collection.
[Item not included.] The complimentary statements in your letter concerning my election are very
much appreciated. Good luck to you in your project. Sincerely". Raymond S. "Jerry" Apodaca
(1934-2023) was the Governor of New Mexico from 1957-1979. The first Hispanic
elected to the governorship since 1918, Apodaca reformed state government and was
appointed as Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness (1978) by President
Jimmy Carter during his administration. Apodaca, who had previously served in the New
Mexico State Senate (1966-1974), published periodicals for Hispanics after leaving office. He
was the founder of "Vista Magazine" and the first publisher of "Hispanic Magazine".
Before entering public service, Apodaca had owned an insurance business. Light corner creases.
