JERRY COLANGELO
Signature of the owner who brought the Arizona Diamondbacks (and other pro sports) to Phoenix
Baseball signed: "Jerry Colangelo". Rawlings Official National League Baseball, Leonard S. Coleman, President, signed in black felt tip in the sweet spot. Jerry Colangelo (b. 1939) was assistant coach of the NBA Chicago Bulls before becoming head coach of the Phoenix Suns, and then-co-owner beginning in 1987. He turned around the team's fortunes, setting it on the road to a string of playoff appearances. In 1994, he began negotiations to bring an expansion baseball franchise to Phoenix. The Arizona Diamondbacks began play in 1998, and became the quickest expansion team to win a World Series when they bested the New York Yankees in 2001. (Co-MVPs of the team were pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, both lured to Phoenix by Colangelo.) Colangelo was instrumental in creating or attracting several other pro teams for Phoenix, including the WNBA Mercury, the Arena Football League Rattlers, and the National Hockey League Coyotes (formerly the Winnipeg Jets). Other baseball owners are accused by team fans of being tightwads, but Colangelo's sin was in the other direction: overspending. The Diamondback's large indebtedness antagonized other owners, and Colangelo sold his interest in 2004. He has since left the world of professional sport. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
