An award-winning performer, producer and composer, Jerry Butler (1942-2012), who is known as "The Ice Man", is known as one of the architects of rhythm and blues. Starting his career in 1958, when he and Curtis Mayfield formed The Impressions, a rhythm and blues group in Chicago, Butler, at age 18, wrote the group's first No. 1 hit, "For Your Precious Love", the following year. Butler's other gold records include "He Will Break Your Heart" (1960), "Moon River" (1961), "Never Gonna Give You Up" (1976), "Hey Western Union Man" (1968), "Brand New Me" (1969), "Only the Strong Survive" (1969; also the title of his autobiography) and "Ain't Understanding Mellow" (1973), and he has received three Grammy Award nominations. In 1991, Butler and the Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to recording, Butler has both hosted and appeared on numerous television variety specials, including hosting Doo-Wop 50 on PBS in 2000. Butler later embarked on another career -- politics. He has served on the Cook County (Chicago) Commission and as Commissioner and President of the Northeast (Illinois) Planning Commission.
