1953, had a bang-up amateur career, winning the 1974 U. S. Amateur
Championship and playing on the winning American teams in the 1975 Walker
Cup and Eisenhower Trophy. He was low amateur at the U. S. Open in 1975, the
year he turned pro, and he came back in 1976 to win the U. S. Open as a pro.
Pate has since notched 15 professional wins, with a total of eight on the
PGA Tour. An award-winning golf course designer, he's worked on over 30 projects
including Kiva Dunes and Limestone Springs in Alabama, which have placed in the
Top 100 American public golf courses numerous times. He was also a color
commentator for ABC, CBS and the BBC in the 1990s. Lightly toned and bowed.
