JERRY STILLER, CO-SIGNED BY: ANNE MEARA Signed b/w publicity photo from The Mike Douglas Show of Stiller and Meara Photograph signed "Jerry Stiller" by Stiller and "Anne Meara" by Meara. B/w, 9¾x8 overall, 9¼x6½ image, one surface. Publicity photo from The Mike Douglas Show (1961-1982). To the public at large, JERRY STILLER (1927-2020), born Gerald Stiller in New York City in 1927, is best known as the husband and comedy partner of actress/director Anne Meara, as the father of comedian Ben Stiller and as Frank Costanza, the eternally kvetching father of born-loser George Costanza (Jason Alexander) in Seinfeld. To acknowledge him for the above-mentioned reasons alone would be grossly unfair. Stiller chose to concentrate his laugh-making skills in the classics, specifically Shakespeare. He appeared in Coriolanus, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare in the Park. He made his Broadway bow in 1975 as ill-tempered gangster Carmine Vespucci in The Ritz, a part he recreated in the 1976 film version. Among his many other credits are Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), Hairspray (1988 and the 2007 musical remake), the made-for-television movie Seize the Day (1987) and Arthur Spooner on The King of Queens (1998-2007). Actress, comedienne, playwright and screenwriter ANNE MEARA (1929-2015), the wife and comedic partner of Jerry Stiller, has appeared in a number of television variety series, in films and on stage both with her husband and as a solo performer. Stiller & Meara rocketed to stardom on 1960s variety shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Steve Allen Show, their material usually drawn from their different ethnic backgrounds. Meara has appeared in a number of feature films, including Lovers and Other Strangers (1970, with Stiller), The Out-of-Towners (1970), Fame (1980) and Awakenings (1990), starred in the TV series Kate McShane (1975), was a regular on Rhoda (1976-1977), Archie Bunker's Place (1979-1983), Alf (1987) and The King of Queens alongside Stiller (1999-2007), and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Anna Christie. Stiller and Meara, who met while auditioning for an opera in 1954 and married the following year, are the parents of comic actor Ben Stiller. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Light impressions on image (not visible head-on). Otherwise, fine condition.
