American writer Jerzy Kosinski (1933-1991) is best known for his 1965
novel, The Painted Bird. He also wrote the novel and screenplay
for the 1980 Academy Award winning comedy/drama Being There starring
Peter Sellers. In the 1980s, it was charged that Kosinski, who had written
several other novels and become a media celebrity, had used other authors to
write his books and that The Painted Bird, which had made both his
literary and personal reputation, was not remotely autobiographical, as he had
claimed. His being discredited is thought to have been a factor in the
author's suicide in 1991. Note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through).
