JESS ALTMILLER
Signature from the percussionist and "cocktail" instrumentalist while
at the Fox Theatre in Philadelphia. Extremely rare!
Signature: "Jess Altmiller/Fox Theatre/Philadelphia, Pa.", in
black ink, 6x4½. Jess Altmiller was a vaudeville percussionist and
head of the Jess Altmiller Quartet. The grandson of Justus Altmiller, one
of the band members who played for the surrender of Robert E. Lee, Altmiller
had a particular interest in altering or combinding musical instruments,
creating items like the "cocktail violin", which was a fiddle with it's top
removed and replaced by cocktail glassed and then played traditionally. He used
these instruments to play unconventional novelty music, performing often at the
Fox Theatre in Philadelphia. Binding holes on left margin. Corners lightly worn
and creased. Light surface creases. Small tear on bottom right margin. Slightly
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
