JESSE H. JONES
Jesse H. Jones signs card bearing his profile silhouette
Silhouette signed: "Jesse H. Jones". B/w, 3x5 card with original left profile silhouette by artist Betty Kaufman. Jesse H. Jones (1874-1956), was a Houston politician and entrepreneur-equally respected and feared. Managing a family tobacco factory at age 14, he had moved up to opening a lumber yard at 19. After expanding his uncles lumber business and establishing a building business in Houston, acquired half interest in the Houston Chronicle (1908 & full ownership in 1926) - he helped secure federal funding for the Houston Ship Channel. Jones refused Woodrow Wilson's offer to be Secretary of Commerce but ultimately accepted the job of Director General of Military Relief for the American Red Cross (WWI). Herbert Hoover appointed him to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (1932-1945) - FDR made him Chairman - leading some to refer to him as "the fourth branch of government." He served as FDR's Secretary of Commerce (1940-1945). Due to Jones' philanthropic activities, multiple university buildings, schools, and hospitals carry his name. Lightly soiled. Fine condition.
