JESSE WHITE. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To George/With
many/thanks/Jesse/White". B/w, 7¾x10. © 1951 Universal Pictures. Jesse
White (1919-1997) appeared in nightclubs before moving to the Broadway stage
in 1942. He was a hit as a sanitarium attendant in Harvey (1944),
repeating the role in the film (1950). A character actor whose film roles
occasionally got prominent billing (Bedtime for Bonzo, 1951; The Rise
and Fall of Legs Diamond, 1960), White was most familiar on TV. He was a
cast regular on two simultaneous sitcoms of the 1950s, Make Room for
Daddy and Private Secretary. However, he was most recognizable as
the original "lonely" Maytag repairman of commercial fame. His last
appearance was in two episodes of Seinfeld (1996). White was a busy man
in 1951, the year this photo was released, appearing in five films, three of
them for Universal. One of his films that year was the Ronald Reagan vehicle,
Bedtime for Bonzo. Lightly creased. Left margin neatly removed.
Otherwise, fine condition.
