JESSE WHITE
A vintage 3½x5x¾ candid photograph of the actor standing beside a poster for Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter
, for which the actor received top billing. Acquired from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane.
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Jesse White", in blue ink, B/w 3½x5¾. Jesse White (1919-1997) appeared in nightclubs before moving to the Broadway stage in 1942. He was a hit as a sanitarium attendant in Harvey (1944), repeating the role in the film (1950). A character actor whose film roles occasionally got prominent billing (Bedtime for Bonzo, 1951; The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, 1960), White was most familiar on TV. He was a cast regular on two simultaneous sitcoms of the 1950s, Make Room for Daddy and Private Secretary. However, he was most recognizable as the original "lonely" Maytag repairman of commercial fame. His last appearance was in two episodes of Seinfeld (1996). White was a busy man in 1951, the year this photo was released, appearing in five films, three of them for Universal. One of his films that year was the Ronald Reagan vehicle, Bedtime for Bonzo. This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Edges decoratively cut. Lightly bowed. Corners lightly worn and creased. Fine condition.
