JESSIE BARTLETT DAVIS
Ink signature of "America's Representative Contralto" dated in 1897. Extremely rare!
Signature: "Jessie Bartlett Davis/1897", in brown ink, 7x4. Jessie Bartlett Davis (1859-1905) was an American opera singer and actress, known as, "America's Representative Contralto." Part of a musical family from Morris, Illinois, Davis and her singing sister Arabelle (1855-1874) were noticed by travelling managers and were booked a tour on the West Coast. Arabelle sadly passed away before beginning the tour, and Davis went out as a solo singer. She moved to Chicago where she trained with Caroline Richings, and later sang in the choir of the Church of the Messiah and the Chicago Church Choir Company. In 1879 Davis made her debut as Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore. While on tour, she met manager Will J. Davis who she married in 1880. She continued performing opera around the country until she joined the Boston New Deal Opera where she was its prima donna. There she made famous the role Alan a-Dale in Robin Hood (Reginald De Koven, Clement Scott 1890), as well as Martha in Les Hugenots, Il Trovatore and Dinorah in The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Dolores in The Serenade which she premiered on Broadway in 1897. She was also seen in vaudeville performances. A writer, she is the author of Only A Chorus Girl. Toned. Left edge slightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
