JESSIE MATTHEWS
Youthful postcard photo signed by the English actress
Postcard Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Jessie Matthews". B/w, 3½x5½. English singer, dancer and actress Jessie Matthews
(1907-1981) started out in the chorus line, working her way up to starring roles
in stage musicals of the 1920s and 1930s. Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hart
wrote songs for her, including the latter's hit "My Heart Stood Still." She
starred in both the stage and film versions of Evergreen, one of
the first British musicals to be a big hit in the US. Her grace as a dancer
earned the sobriquet "the female Fred Astaire," efforts to pair them on
screen ran afoul of studio rivalries. Her last starring role was in the musical
adventure Tom Thumb (1958). Creased at corners. Mounting remnants on
verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
