Typed Letter signed: "J. C. Pritchard", 1 page, 8x5¼. Washington, D.C., 1901 March 21. On letterhead of the US Senate Committee on Patents, Mr. Pritchard, Chairman to W. W. West, Asheville, North Carolina. In full: "Replying to your letter of recent date, I beg to congratulate you on the fact that your son succeeded in passing the examination, and I assure you that whenever an opportunity presents itself, it will afford me great pleasure to recommend his appointment. With best wishes, I am, Sincerely yours". Originally a lawyer and newspaper editor, Jeter C. Pritchard (1857-1921) represented North Carolina in the US Senate from 1895 to 1903. He was then the only Republican Senator from a southern state. After leaving the Senate, Pritchard served as a federal judge until his death in 1921. Vertical mailing folds affecting "ha"in signature. Heavily toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
