JETTA GOUDAL

Her rare signature on an inscribed and signed photo, shown in unusual hat with jeweled strap and uplifted veil

Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Terry Stoudenheimer/with every good wish/Sincerely/Jetta Goudal". B/w 8 x 10. Silent film star Jetta Goudal (1891-1985) emigrated from war-devastated Europe in 1918, acting on New York stages until discovered by Hollywood. (In her application to Paramount, she listed herself as a French gentile and shaved 10 years off her age.) She became one of the most popular silent screen stars of the mid- and late 1920s. Her starring roles included, in addition to the one shown here, The Green Goddess (1923) and Lady of the Pavements (1929). After she successfully sued DeMille for breach of contract, and became an activist in Actors Equity, her screen career waned. In the talking era, she appeared in a couple of French-language films and in Will Rogers' Business and Pleasure (1932). She married director Harvey Grieve in 1930, and the couple prospered as interior designers. Lightly soiled. Slight ink smudge on signature. Otherwise fine condition.
