JIM BROWN
"the greatest football player of the 20th century"
Document signed: "Jim Brown", 1p, 8½x11. Also signed "Vernon C.
Troupe". Los Angeles, California, 1996 February 2. Brown grants
permission to Vernon Troupe, a former assistant to music great Ray Charles, to
include a photo of Brown with Ray Charles at the birthday celebration of Willie
Brown (Speaker of the California House of Representatives) in 1992. A five-sport
letterman in high school, Brown could have excelled in any sport he chose. A
first team All American fullback at Syracuse, Brown was the NFL's Rookie of
the Year in 1957. In nine remarkable NFL seasons, Brown averaged 104
yards per game, a record 5.2 yards per rushing carry, and never missed a
game! He rushed for over 1,000 yards in seven seasons, at a time when the
NFL season was only 12, and then 14 games long. In 1966, Brown retired from
football at the top of his game to pursue a movie career. While his acting
skills never matched his football prowess, Brown performed credibly in such
films as Ice Station Zebra (1968), 100 Rifles (1969) and
Original Gangstas (1996). A community activist, Brown has worked
to promote black-owned businesses, to equip ex-convicts with job skills, and to
mediate disputes among rival youth gangs. In 2002, The Sporting News named Brown
the greatest pro football player of the 20th century. Fine
condition.
