JIM BAKKER
The televangelist convicted of fraud pens his name on this card thanking the recipient for "the photographs taken off television"
Typed Card signed: "Jim" in black ink, 4¼x5¼ folded, 8½x5¼ unfolded. No place, 20 November 1981. Mailing envelope included. Postmarked Charlotte, North Carolina, November 23, 1981. To "Dear Henry". In full: "Just a note to thank you for the photographs taken off television./ Your thoughtfulness is appreciated and we are gratified at your interest in Heritage- PTL./ May TODAY be a great day of blessing upon you and yours from God's great storehouse of love and supply./ In warmest Christian love". In the 1960s, Jim Bakker and his then-wife Tammi Faye Baker began hosting a variety show on Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network. The show was very popular, and a decade later the Bakkers went off on their own, founding the PTL (Praise the Lord) Ministry and television station. As their ministry grew, the Bakkers were carried on even more stations, and founded a religion-themed amusement park, Heritage USA. In 1987, Jim Bakker resigned from PTL after admitting to sexual improprieties, and evidence of financial mismanagement or outright fraud soon followed. Bakker served 5 years in prison (1988-1993). Tammi divorced him and remarried. In 2003, admitting to his past mistakes, and promoting a different Biblical message based on his study of the book while in prison, Jim Bakker came back on the air with a new religious program broadcast from Branson, Missouri. Envelope- neatly sliced open at top fold. Two pieces of tape applied to end of top flap. Stamps on top flap. Otherwise, fine condition. Card- fine condition. Two items.
