for Gasoline Alley for Sunday, Jan. 25. Frank King created the comic
strip Gasoline Alley in 1918, a unique story comic in which the
characters aged naturally. (Walt Wallet, an original Gasoline Alley
character, is over 100 years old as of this biography and probably isn't long
for this world) In the late 1950s, King turned the strip over to Dick Moores,
who hired Scancarelli, born in New York City in 1941, as his assistant in
1979. Since 1986, Scancarelli has been its sole author and artist.
Scancarelli's strip won the National Cartoonist Society Story Comic Strip
Award in 1988 and celebrated its 90th birthday on November 24, 2008.
Scancarelli is also a skilled fiddler and founding member of the bluegrass band
Kilocycle Kowboys. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Normal pencil tracings.
5-inch wide portion was neatly cut from top and reattached with tape on verso.
Tape residue at bottom corners, with discoloration at bottom left corner, and
along bottom edge of cut-off top portion. Light dents in left edge. Otherwise in
fine condition.
