being hugged by his mother (a teaching pro from whom he learned the game from
the age of 3). Jimmy Connors (b. 1952) won an all-time record of 109
pro tournaments, including the Australian Open, the British Open (twice) and the
U.S. Open (5 times between 1974-1983). He was ranked #1 in the world for five
consecutive years (1974-1978). Combatively argumentative early in his
career, Connors mellowed in his later years and became much more popular.
