JIMMY YOUNG
Narrowly defeated by Ali in a heavyweight title bout.
Photograph signed: "Jimmy/Young". Color, 8x10. Jimmy Young (1948-2005)
fought the greatest boxers in an era of boxing greats. His punch-ducking style
meant that most of his wins and losses were by decision, not knockout. On
April 30, 1976, he fought Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight title - the
match shown here. He lost a controversial 15-round decision, but broke Ali's
eardrum. Later that year, he whipped George Foreman in a 12-round decision,
sending Foreman into ten years of retirement. In 1977, he lost another disputed
15-round decision to Ken Norton. According to friends, this disappointment
damaged Young's spirit. He kept fighting for another ten years, but with less
success. Young battled alcoholism and ring-induced brain damage in the final
years of his life. Fine condition.
