JOAN AIKEN
Typed Letter signed in 1992, wondering why anyone's kids would be
interested in a collection of autographs
Typed Letter signed: "Joan Aiken", 1 page, 8¼x11½. No place,
1992 March 18. To Robert Allen, in full: "Thank you for your
interesting letter. Of course I have not the least objection to giving you my
autograph for your sons, but I wonder, will a book full of signatures really be
so interesting and meaningful for them? Perhaps it will; I don't think I am able
to judge. Anyway, I hope that your hopes and aspirations for them will be
fulfilled. No, I have never written an autobiography, but my father, Conrad
Aiken, of course did so, and I think his is still in print. It was called
USHANT. Here is my autograph, Yours sincerely". Prolific English novelist
Joan Aiken (1924-2004), the daughter of American author Conrad Aiken, wrote over
100 books in many different genres, including children's stories. She published
a 40-year series of novels set in an alternate history London, known
collectively as the Wolves Chronicles. She published several novels intended as
sequels to novels of Jane Austin. She won an Edgar Allen Poe Award (1972), and
received an MBE for her contribution to children's literature. 2 horizontal fold
creases. Edges lightly ragged. Torn at upper left edge. Top corners lightly
creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
