Actor Joan Caulfield wrote this note on a b/w picture postcard from New York City with "Greetings from fair Gotham!" to Oscar-winning director Billy Wilder in 1946.
Autograph note signed "Joan Caulfield" in pencil. 1 page, 5¼x3¼. Printed on verso of a picture postcard from Le Café Chambord in New York City. Postmarked New York City, Jan. 13, 1946. Addressed to Billy Wilder, Writers Building, Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California. One 1¢ green-and-white George Washington stamp affixed. In full: "Greetings from fair Gotham! Am looking forward to some smashing doubles upon my return". In 1946, Caulfield starred in Blue Skies and Monsieur Beaucaire. in BILLY WILDER (1906-2002) was a German-born American director who won Academy Awards for Best Director for 1945's The Lost Weekend (Best Director, Best Screenplay), 1960's The Apartment (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay),and 1950's Sunset Boulevard (Best Story and Screenplay). JOAN CAULFIELD (1922-1991), born in East Orange, New Jersey, was a popular starlet who played featured roles in films from Miss Susie Slagle's (1945) to Buckskin (1968) and in mature supporting roles thereafter. She had debuted to good reviews on Broadway in Kiss and Tell (1943). She appeared in several musicals, including Blue Skies (1946). Caulfield had her own TV sitcom, Sally, for one season (1957-1958). Lightly toned and soiled. Two file holes at top edge. Stamp touches address but not note or signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
