THANKING A FAN FOR BIRTHDAY WISHES WHILE SHE IS "ON THE SET" OF HER NEXT PICTURE
JOAN CRAWFORD. Autograph Letter signed: "Joan", 2p, 7¼x10½ (front and verso. No place, no date. On personal letterhead to "Dear Dan" [Mahoney, a New York fan with whom she corresponded frequently in the late 1920s and early 1930s]. In full: "Just a note to thank you form the bottom of my heart for your thoughtfulness on my birthday. You should just know how happy it makes me to know you are gaining in health and are happier. I am very very happy that you are doing so nicely. Am on the set at this writing so forgive if it's brief. Thank you again and again for your kindness to me and keep on being happy. As ever". Crawford (1907-1977), originally a professional dancer, made her film debut in 1925. She won a Best Actress Oscar for Mildred Pierce (1945) and was nominated for two more (Possessed, 1947; Sudden Fear, 1952). A tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest (1978, later made into a feature film), by her daughter Christina, portrayed Crawford as unfeeling and ruthlessly ambitious. However, Crawford was a faithful correspondent with her large fan base. Lightly soiled at ¾-inch of right edge of upper horizontal fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
