Stage, screen and television actress JOAN FONTAINE (born Joan de Beavoir de Havilland in 1917) started in film in 1935, but her career took off in the 1940s, when she starred in two of Alfred Hitchcock's films, Rebecca (for which she received an Oscar nomination) and Suspicion (for which she received the Best Actress Academy Award in 1941). The younger sister of actress Olivia deHavilland, they were the first sisters to win Oscars and the first to be nominated for Academy Awards in the same year (1941). When Joan won the coveted statuette in 1941, the sisters, who were known for their jealous feuds, became permanently estranged. A leading lady of American plays and film, PATRICIA NEAL (1926-2010) studied drama in college and worked as a model before debuting on Broadway in The Voice of the Turtle (1946). Her performance in the play, Another Part of the Forest, got the attention of Hollywood, and she made her screen debut in a light farce, John Loves Mary, in 1949. That same year she was impressive in The Fountainhead opposite Gary Cooper, whom she later said was the great love of her life. After marrying British writer Roald Dahl in 1953, Neal disappeared from the screen for several years, returning in 1957's A Face in the Crowd, after which she was more selective in choosing her film roles. For her performance in Hud (1963), she won the Best Actress Academy Award. In 1965, Neal suffered a massive series of strokes that left her confined to a wheelchair, semi-paralyzed and nearly unable to speak. Over the next several years, she made a remarkable recovery, returning to the screen in The Subject Was Roses (1968), for which she received another Best Actress Oscar nomination. That year, she was presented with the "Heart of the Year" Award by President Johnson. Actress ELLEN BURSTYN (b. 1932) enjoyed her greatest prominence during the '70s, a decade during which she was a virtual fixture of Academy Award voters' ballots. Burstyn won a Best Actress Oscar for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974). She earned four other Oscar nominations for The Last Picture Show (1971), The Exorcist (1973), Same Time Next Year (1978) - a role she reprised on Broadway - and Resurrection (1980). Burstyn's TV and stage performances have also earned several Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony nominations. LOUISE FLETCHER (1934-2022), who has starred in television and on film, had her signature role in 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, playing Nurse Mildred Ratched. Her portrayal earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe, and her success put her in demand as a supporting and character actress on television as well as in films. Fletcher earned a 1966 Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on Picket Fences and appeared as villainous priestess Kai Winn in a number of episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Slightly soiled.
