JOAN FONTAINE
The Academy Award winning actress signs a release form for the News Syndicate Co. Inc.
Document signed: "Joan Fontaine". 1 page, 8½x11. No place, 1949 May 25. To the News Syndicate Co. Inc., New York. In full: "In consideration of the publicity to be given to me and which may arise here from, my consent is hereby irrevocably given to you, your assignees and licensees, and to the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate, Inc., and its subscribers and licensees, to use my name, picture, or portrait, in publications for editorial or promotional purposes, excluding, however, commercial advertising." Stage, screen and television actress Joan Fontaine (born Joan de Beavoir de Havilland, 1917-2013) started in film in 1935, but her career took off in the 1940s, when she starred in two of Alfred Hitchcock's films, Rebecca (for which she received an Oscar nomination) and Suspicion (for which she received the Best Actress Academy Award in 1941). The younger sister of actress Olivia deHavilland, they were the first sisters to win Oscars and the first to be nominated for Academy Awards in the same year (1941). When Joan won the coveted statuette in 1941, the sisters, who were known for their jealous feuds, became permanently estranged. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper blank margin. Ink note (unknown hand) 1-inch below signature. Signature bleeding (still legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
