(1912-1996) was an outstanding amateur golfer. Her golf associates and a
wealthy patron raised the money for her to study voice in Europe, and she became
a talented operatic soprano, performing at Covent Gardens, La Scala, the
Vienna State Opera, the Bolshoi, and other great stages. Best known for her
Puccini roles, Hammond was also a successful concert performer. After retiring
from the stage, she returned to Australia as an opera manager and voice teacher.
She received successively higher honors from Queen Elizabeth II: OBE, CBE, DBE
and CMG, between 1953 and 1972. Pianist DAVID ANDREWS often accompanied
Hammond and other classical artists, and can be heard on some of her recordings.
