married Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale in 1955. When her husband was
elected U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1964-1976), Joan and their three
children moved to Washington, D.C., where they remained after "Fritz" was
elected as Jimmy Carter's Vice President in 1976. A long-time advocate of the
arts, Joan was named Honorary Chairperson of the Federal Council on the Arts
and the Humanities by Carter in 1977. Later, when her husband was U.S.
Ambassador to Japan (1993-1996), she became immersed in Japanese Art. Fine
condition.
