Joan Roberts (1917-2012) was an American stage and film actress, best
known for originating the role of Laurey in the Broadway production of
Oklahoma! (1943). Roberts originally auditioned for the
role of Ado Annie, but was instead cast in the lead role by Oscar
Hammerstein. A wonderful start to her career, Roberts would star in a number of
other Broadway productions, including Are You With It? (1945), High
Button Shoes (1947), and in her return to Broadway after a long hiatus,
Follies (2001). Though her career was successful, it was also
short and selective, with only a number of credits to both stage and film. In
her later years she lead workshops on singing and acting, until retiring
completely. Unfortunately, Roberts died in 2012 from heart failure, being
another loss to the already small surviving cast from the original
Oklahoma! Cast. Corners lightly worn. Slightly toned. Faint
staining on edges. Ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
