Attractive image of the mezzo-soprano, who performed with the Met and later founded Ambassadors of Opera. A rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Dear Joseph/Very best wishes/Joann Grillo/1961". B/w, 8x10. Mezzo-soprano Joann Grillo (1939-1999) performed with the Brooklyn Opera in the early 1960s, and debuted at the Metropolitan in 1963 as Rosette in Massenet's Manon. A regular at the Met through the 1970s, she had occasional leading roles, as in Carmen, but was more often cast in strong supporting roles. In 1981 Grillo and her husband, tenor Richard Kness, formed Ambassadors of Opera and Concert Worldwide, often performing on makeshift stages while bringing the genre to remote locations worldwide. They received some criticism for performing in Beijing shortly after the Tiananmen bloodshed of 1989. Corners worn and creased. Ink beaded and faded in some areas, but still legible. Light surface creases. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
