This film, the film adaptation of Tennessee William's Broadway play, Orpheus Descending, also starred Anna Magnani, Maureen Stapleton and Victor Jory. The foreign language version, Pelle di Serpente, was released in 1959; the U.S. version followed in 1960. In 1959, Woodward starred in The Sound and the Fury; in 1960, she was seen on the big screen in From the Terrace. Joanne Woodward (born in 1930) is one of the most acclaimed film actresses of her era, and she is also highly visible as a television and theatrical performer as well as a prominent social activist. Woodward received Best Actress Academy Awards in 1957 for her role in The Three Faces of Eve and again in 1969 for Rachel, Rachel. She also earned Best Actress honors at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. In addition to her wins, Woodward has also had several Oscar nominations and has been the recipient of numerous television Emmy Awards. She has been married to actor Paul Newman since 1958. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners, black mark at upper right edge. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Paper clip impression at upper margin. Identifying ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
